It’s no secret that 2015 was a tough year for me and one that I can for the most part probably forget about. While it’s certainly not all about the results, mine were essentially non-existent last year with a number of humbling experiences at the IRONMAN distance (Nice & Arizona) and flat tires (Escape from Alcatraz & Timberman 70.3) and even a few crashes to top it off (St. Croix 70.3 & Monterrey 70.3). Needless to say, it got a bit old! With that said, I know I’m hardly the first person out there to have a bumpy year and it’s something that everyone goes thru at some point as an athlete or just in life.
I’m turning the page on last year and am starting 2016 with a fresh outlook and very content knowing that I’ve gotten my bad luck and injuries out of the way in my first 3 years as a professional. 😉 It was really just clever planning!
I decided at the end of the season that it was time to make a change with coaches. My Dad has coached me the last few years and been a massive help to my career but we both realized that it was time for him to go back to being just my Dad and relieve him of his coaching duties. It was quite challenging at times to separate the two for me and I felt that a change was just what I needed to refresh my mind and give me a chance to continue to progress.
Maybe the first selfie of my Dad’s entire life. 🙂 On top of Green Mountain.
I started working with Matt Dixon of purplepatch Fitness this past month and it has been a great few weeks to kick start the year. I’ll be headed down to Kona at the end of this month for a camp with Matt and most of the other professionals he coaches. I’ve been to Kona a number of times but never outside of that one little race in October that takes over the island. It will be a nice warm escape from the Boulder winter and I’m looking forward to venturing off the only 2 roads I know in Kona (Queen K & Ali’I Drive) and seeing a bit more of the island. All while of course I will be doing some hard work in prep for the 2016 season.
Hope everyone is off to a great start in 2016 and looking ahead! I hope to see many of you at the races (see schedule here).
Enjoying a run in Bozeman with old friends Bernie Nelson & Ari Davis.
Bundled up for another brisk winter ride!
Quick break on the summit of Bear Peak in Boulder (and on a milder day!)
Not a bad view from the top of Bear Peak!
